Creating a Practice of Living Enlightenment
The Daily Practice of Creating Yourself is divided into five steps.
Step 1 : Select an Intention
Step 2 : Select a Pillar in which you want to be that intention (There are five pillars: Me, Work, Family, Friends and the World)
Step 3 : Select a Target Percent (the degree to which you want to be that intention)
Step 4 : Visualise being your Intention
Step 5 : Make a Verbal Commitment
I use the mnemonic IPPVV to remember the steps. Creating your daily context should take anything from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. There is a daily assessment template provided in the Workbook that ensures you have followed all five steps.
Select a step for more detail on each one.
THE STEPS IN SUMMARY
(Step 1) : Select an Intention (I) - Choose your 'I AM' INTENTION Note: you do not need to change your intention every day, in fact it is often more powerful to keep an intention for 5 or more days so that you can really connect with it.
(Step 2) Select a PILLAR (P) - PICK A PILLAR in which you want to bring that intention into being.
The first of the two P’s, the pillars are based on the different areas of your life. They are:-Me, -Work, -Family, -Friends
-The World (this is everything and everyone else, so think strangers, the teller at the shopping market, people who have not real connection with)
The pillars create an additional focus for realising your selected intention and, just as there was not right or wrong intention, there is no ‘right’ pillar to start with. If you are feeling brave try working with the ‘me’ pillar as this often has a far greater impact than focusing on external areas of your life. Having said that, you will probably find that it makes more sense to start with the work and family pillars as these tend to be where situations exist that you want to change.
If you feel you have some mastery of an intention make sure you can apply it to at least a 70% level (see step 3) across most of the pillars, especially ‘Me’ and ‘The World’. You should also be able to consistently achieve 70% mastery, which means you can sustain that level of mastery for at least 3 or more consecutive days.
Selecting an Enlightenment Intention
(Step 3 ) Select a TARGET PERCENTAGE (P) - This is the percentage to which you wish to live this intention and is a critical step in the process.
The second of the two P’s, the Percentage is a critical step in the process. The target percentage is the degree to which you want to master an intention. If you choose a target percentage of 70% you are choosing to be that intention for 70% of your day. If you have not selected a pillar (or specific event), then your intention and target percentage apply to any situation within your day.
As Claiming Yourself is intended to be achievable, there is one simple and critical rule when selecting a target percentage - never stretch yourself more than 30%. Living Enlightenment is about small, achievable baby steps NOT huge, almost impossible leaps and if you stretch yourself past 30% you may find yourself living an extremely challenging day.
When finding your target percentage, think about a normal day. If your intention is Tolerance and you lose it in the traffic every day then you are probably sitting at 20% mastery (maybe even less). Remember that if you forget to choose a target percentage you automatically choose 100% which means you have asked to shift a rather impressive 80%. This is a huge jump and is going to take you to some really unfamiliar territory. The universe will challenge you to the degree that you challenge yourself so if the gap between where you are and where you want to be is greater than 30% expect situations to crop up that really push who you are. You may be up for that challenge or you may find that you are totally unable to cope with what the universe is throwing at you! If you find yourself in the proverbial day from hell, take a moment to step out of the drama and revise your target percentage down.
Remember, this is about sustainable change.
The aim is to succeed not make it impossibly hard!
(Step 4 ) VISUALISE (V)
You have your intention and a target percentage. Now you need to create a powerful focus that you can take into your day. This requires that you take at least 5 minutes to VISUALISE yourself already living your intention.
The first of the V’s, Visualise is another important step in the process. You can get through your day without it, but it does help if you have lived your day in your mind’s eye. In fact, the ability to pre-live an event and see it successfully unfolding is one of the tricks used by successful athletes. Indeed, it was one of the skills I attribute to my success in deep diving. Visualisation allows you to practice with no witnesses… which means you can do it over and over until you are comfortable with your choices.
STOP THINKING! START CHOOSING AND DOING! AVOID THE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS TRAP! YOU CAN ACT INDEPENDANTLY OF YOUR THOUGHTS AND YOUR FEELINGS
(Step 5) VERBALISE - Use Your Words (V) - Make a VERBAL COMMITMENT. Words are important as they are the only things you can consciously choose. "I AM ...."
A verbal commitment sits in both your conscious and unconscious being creating a forceful and much needed reminder that pops up when you slip into your old habits. The power of the verbal commitment is as much about the words you use as it is about as the power and intention you place behind those words. By committing you are saying that you will do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. You will not be scared off! By committing you also ensure that the universe is aware of your intention and can support you.
WheThe strongest verbal commitment you can make is "I am..." for 40% for today at <insert pillar/ situation here>.”
When I am working with Tolerance in a specific situation my verbalisation is : “I am 70% Tolerance for my meeting”. If I am working with Tolerance in a specific pillar it would be : “I am 70% Tolerance with my family”.
The words you use will frame what you will create so avoid words like ‘try’. Be firm and positive and clear about what it is you want to achieve.
